Abstract

This handout explains a hydrogen breath test, which is done to help diagnose symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, and diarrhea. The test shows if bacteria in the small bowel are causing the symptoms. The test may also be used to check for problems absorbing lactose (milk sugar) or fructose (fruit sugar).
